Tell me you want to play [and list your fandoms please!] and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions:
1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
The Adult Swim run, way back in the day, was how I first watched Stand Alone Complex season 1. (I still have trouble believing it was "way back", but yes, it was during high school and I have a Master's degree now. HOLY FUCK.)
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I think I'll always be obsessed with it in some way? Motoko is still my favorite character in like, everything. It's a little rough since, well, there's not really any more canon to explore - but the canon that does exist is very deep indeed, so I'll always love it that way.
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
Um. The answer is yes? But specific standouts to me: Stand Alone Complex season 1 episode 25 [Rain of Bullets: BARRAGE], because I am a Batou/Motoko shipper; 2nd GiG episode 11 [Kusanagi's Maze: LABYRINTH] as a showcase of Motoko's humanity; the Innocence movie's exploration of philosophy and Batou's character, though it does make far more sense after the first movie since Oshii does tweak the original Shirow storyline a bit. But really, the entirety of the Stand Alone Complex "trilogy" (SAC, 2nd GiG, Solid State Society) is worth its weight in gold to me, and the only thing I didn't enjoy very much was Man-Machine Interface and uh that terrible PSP game that no one remembers. (Heck, I even liked the Fujisaku side novels.)
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
I've written a few drabbles over on
fic_promptly, which I linked to last time. I had plans for a huge sprawling thing set between the end of 2nd GiG and Solid State Society, but uh, then I won a bid at
fandom_helps, so I'm letting
windfallswest play with my ideas instead, as I'd love to see someone else's take on it. I requested Motoko for last
yuletide too, and discussed Kusanagi's Maze: LABYRINTH. I am always up for more discussion though! And back in high school I used to make LJ icons too.
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
um, yes? It's lonely here. ;___; (Though a big welcome to
demarafis, who I met through
fandomsecrets's anon meme!) It's really such an excellent, deep show, and I love it so much. I think if you like cyberpunk it's worth watching - and even if you don't, it's a great exploration on what it means to be human, with badass but human characters.

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
Again, the [adult swim] run is where I got started. High school was a good time to be an anime fan, man.
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I've kind of "moved on"? I mean, I've watched all of the original anime (including the first movie) and read some of the manga, though not much; I haven't caught up on Brotherhood yet though I really should. I know there's a whole lot of fandom out there and I recognize its existence but I don't really participate anymore - if anyone's got recs on getting back into it, good fic and what not, I'd be happy to hear from them!
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
I can't speak on Brotherhood, but episode 13 of the original series is a complete and utter gut-wrencher. My favorite thing about the show has always been the military men, so that's pretty compelling to me.
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Back in high school, I wrote a handful of drabbles and made a lot of LJ icons, including participating in (and occasionally moderating) a few icon contests. I think when I get back into Brotherhood I might get into the graphics end of it again, at least.
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
It's pretty huge, and I don't know everything about it nowadays! But it is a pretty good show, a good example of what anime of that era was capable of, both in terms of fascinating story and graphic style (it is really *very* pretty and played with color contrasts really beautifully). And it's definitely neither the ridiculously long and involved shounen nor over-the-top harem-y moe series that are popular nowadays, which is a bit of fresh air.

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
My local Nerd Society. The idea of cooperative first person shooters is really appealing to them, so it was a natural fit. I didn't own a computer that could run the original game when it first came out, so I'd play a lot on Adam's computer with his account with friends. I did have a much better rig by the second game though, and preordered a four pack with Adam and a couple of his roommates. Good times.
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
...I'm terrible at first person shooters, lol. And nowadays I don't have access to a computer that can play them, which is a shame. I do love the game and its setting, and it holds a lot of memories for me from playing together with Nerd Society. But if they make a third game somehow, I will be there with bells on!
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
I loved "The Sacrifice" tie-in comic in particular for its expansion on the characters' past (especially Zoe's, oh my lord), and the Valve comics were all very, very beautiful and well-made. And unlike a lot of tie-in merchandise, they stayed really true to the original concept and vision, which I highly respect. (Bonus: published by Dark Horse Comics, who, yes, also released the original Ghost in the Shell manga in the States - but just generally seem to have really great taste in comics worth publishing, from my limited experience.) For pure silliness, my favorite map is "Dark Carnival", because well, who doesn't love running along wooden roller coaster tracks, shooting clowns! Also, ROCK BAND PYRO SHOW TO SUMMON THE HELICOPTER. Fuck yes!
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Not particularly in the Internet sense, though perhaps I should. >.> I wish I had the technical ability to mod the game or make new maps - I've had a lot of fun on user created content. And its world is really tightly made with some pretty crazy implications regarding the nature of the world after the infection, which I think would be fun to explore. Really for me, "fandom" was about playing with my friends; the trials and tribulations of earning the Guardin' Gnome achievement, ridiculous shenanigans on Versus involving playing Tank, and the like. The night that Adam didn't get elected president of the "official" (school-sponsored) Nerd Society, we ended up all sitting around at a friend's house drinking wine and playing Versus in an impromptu LAN party. It's moments like those, really, that made the "fandom" for me.
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?
I think if you like PC games it's worth playing. It really is best with other people, though - the bot AI really is that dumb sometimes - but it's a whole lot of fun, with some really satisfying crowning moments of awesome and badass, as you'd expect from Valve. And its world, as I said, is surprisingly polished from what little bits you get to see (another great Valve hallmark). So it's worth giving a shot, at least for a bit!
