The other, OTHER mental health problem with generative AI [ai, tech]

Talk to me about interesting stuff you found

NAME: just call me nerdsorrow for now <3.

AGE: I am thirty or forty years old! I don't mind being followed or messaged by the legally minor, the gen zees/gen alphas are doing a lot of good web art/retro revival stuff right now. my journal is gen atm, I will likely make a private community for writing if I start posting fic or other nsfw.

I MOSTLY POST ABOUT: Art (other people's) (especially smallweb and multimedia stuff), writing (other people's), music, movies, etc. There will be the inevitable diaryposting and a bit of personal art, but I want to share cool stuff I've found.

I AM LOOKING FOR: Do you post about art, music, movies, etc? If you ever do even a little bit at all of recs or reviews, comment here. If you share your own art of any kind, comment here! It's so hard to find good new things on this evil internet.

SUBSCRIPTION/ACCESS POLICY: Currently all my stuff is public, if I use this more intensively, I may make personal/diary posts private

Real weather still cold, emotional weather warming

A week of improving emotional weather, led by two or three major good things:

  • My Zillian stock sale went through, enabling a small and pre-planned shopping spree. In particular, I was waiting for this before purchasing a new sewing machine (a refurbished Janome Sewist 740dc) and DDR pads. Both of these should provide many hours (hopefully years) of use. I also ordered a new battery for my laptop, which is from late 2022 and which I don't feel like replacing yet.

  • Spent an evening helping [personal profile] apfelsingail move into her new apartment, and the squirrel helped too. So satisfying on multiple levels! We got all the moving company's boxes unpacked.

  • Circus training went well, overall. I've been confused at some of it going well and some of it going badly, but I had a really good talk with Tiny Person in which we figured out the pattern. What's happening isn't great -- I'm holding tension, and it's messing up my movements, so that anything requiring speed and momentum is a struggle while the things I can creep into slowly are going just fine. But it's good to have figured it out. I'm working on more flowing, swinging, circular motions and trying to let the tension go. In the meantime, on the slow side of things, I did my best-ever backbend press into forearm stand. So there was that.

There's been some nice crossword puzzle progress. I met with my collaborator Z and finalized clues for a puzzle (thus finalizing it entirely) and we sent that in to the NYT, and at the same time we're most of the way to a final next grid, so we're going to have another soon. In the meantime, one that I was working on by myself suddenly filled really nicely. I'm still going to iterate on it, but now I'm absolutely certain it's worth submitting once it's done. Feels good to be generating puzzles again after a lull.

I went to Anime Con for a while (again, with squirrel) and it was a lot more sexualized than the science fiction cons tend to be. So many cartoon boobs. SO MANY. We had a good talk about how many women there seem surprisingly okay with the asymmetrical hypersexualized stuff, and it led me to think back about the arc of my own experience with The Male Gaze. There's a while when being able to pull that gaze around is new and fun and exciting. Then a while where one realizes that attracting people that way too much, too quickly, can kind of warp how they relate to the rest of you. Then a decade or two in the workforce, often trying quite hard to keep sexuality out of the picture while learning more than you wanted to about patriarchy, sexism and microaggressions. All in all... sure, I saw a lot of young women and enbies at Anime Con. But the 50-year-olds I saw there were almost entirely men.

The house is still leaking. I talked the bug into removing a square of drywall from our unit's wall in order to better see what's going on in the ledge technically outside our unit, and that paid off in that we were able to see some water running down a board. But at some point we'll have to fix a big hole in our wall.

Artemis II news is giving me life, in the context of the rest of the news. Lunar flyby tomorrow, bring it!

And hmm, it turns out that Walkabout Mini Golf on the VR headset is more fun than I would have expected? I have introduced the bug to this too.

🔺 [music]

Polka-dotted extraterrestrials with prehensile toes and monster groove have come to save humankind with virtuoso looped microtonal rock in compound time signatures.

Look, based on that description, I wouldn't have given this the time of day myself either, but there's a reason these maniacs have become an absolute phenomenon.

Gentle readers, Angine de Poitrine.

Absolutely read the comments. As much of a treat as the band.

Like a lot of things that have arrived from space, their initial point of impact on this planet was Québec. Some clever person noticed that their track titles are phonetic spellings of Québécois slang (Joual).

(Hopefully) Returning to Dreamwidth

Name: I'm Nix/Nyx. (Either spelling is fine.) I also use "they/them" by default, but any pronouns are fine and good.

Age: 28.

I mostly post about: my personal life, which often means things that have happened recently or my mental or physical health. Sometimes I'll also post about hobbies and interests. I do want to post about my interests more, but sadly my health can take over my life quite a bit.

My hobbies and interests are: Music (particularly singing and learning bass right now), streaming (particularly VTubing), and playing video games are some of my main hobbies. I also try to read (mostly nonfiction) and want to get into writing again. I really like alt fashion and doing fun makeup, but sadly haven't been dressing up or touching makeup much lately. Oh, and I occasionally delve deep into researching psychology every now and then, so you might see something related to that. It's hard to name more specific interests right now, but I'm currently attempting to watch One Piece up to where I took a break from reading the manga, which is no small task. I've also been playing Arknights: Endfield, old MMORPGs, and Overwatch lately.

I'm looking to meet people who: have similar interests or also live with chronic illness, disability, mental health conditions, and/or are neurodivergent.

My posting schedule tends to be: very sporatic. I tend to use this site very sporatically in general.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: At the very least, I would only like to add people who lean politically left. No right-wingers or centrists, please. I don't have the brain power to name all of my stances right now, but a few of them people might have problems with are being pro Palestine (and anti genocide in general) and rights for marginalized people in general. We don't have to agree on everything politically if you're comfortable with that. (It really depends on the specific things and the cirumstances.) I guess my main dealbreaker is not being left-leaning. Oh, and I don't want to add anyone under 18. Generally I'd prefer to add people who are 20 and up.

Before adding me, you should know: I post a lot about my life and health, which understandably isn't for everyone. I'm also very shy and often have trouble getting back to DMs or comments. While I try my best to comment, I can't always think of something to say or might be low on energy, so if it's okay with you, I might comment "❤︎" (or something similar) on posts I've read.

Edit: One more thing. I prefer to mutually subscribe before giving full access to my journal!

That's it I think! Thanks for reading. ❤︎

(no subject)

Name: S.

Age: 30s

Location: UK

I mostly post about: I try to keep it light, varied and enjoyable to other people; probably a focus on books, art and culture. I keep track of books I’m reading by posting excerpts. I treat the internet like I’m chatting with strangers in line at the grocery store / like I’m sending postcards to friends. (Things I don’t write about: people in my life, my job, my politics.)

My hobbies are: Writing, art and photography, STEM, history, vintage fashion, design, cooking, visiting museums/galleries, long walks in the countryside.

My fandoms are: I’ve sometimes written fic but for the most part I don’t really ‘do’ fandom. I like classic literature, British miniseries, old crime novels, genre fiction, war dramas, historical fiction, and (often obscure) character actors; I largely avoid YA and franchises.

I'm looking to meet people who: I like people who are kind, at ease with themselves, intellectually curious, and have mostly offline hobbies. I like to interact with mutuals regularly (I probably won’t comment on every entry and I don’t expect that everyone will comment on all of mine, but I like to maintain correspondence). We don’t need to know everything about each other. Also, I’m not truly a prude but to all intents and purposes please do treat me like one; I will do the same to everyone else.

My posting schedule tends to be: Variable, but approximately once a week.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Unsolicited advice, insufficient grass-touching, relentless negativity, too much fandom-posting (I just won’t have much to contribute!). I’d prefer not to add/be added by anyone under 18, even though my blog is very SFW.

Before adding me, you should know: Sometimes I’m very busy! And I’m Jewish.

C.K. Cornette ([personal profile] midnight_heavenly_bodies) wrote in [community profile] addme2026-03-30 08:40 pm

Looking for more people!

Name: C.K. or Chester

Age: 36, nearly 37, growing old mandatory, growing up optional

I mostly post about: Culture Club/Boy George & Jon Moss (my hyperfixation of 22 years and counting), Linkin Park, wrestling (classic SMW/WWF, Jim Cornette, and my deeply cursed WWE 2K25 Universe), my OCs who are realer to me than most people, witchcraft/spirit work/folk healing/moon rituals/grief magic, retro gaming, emotional overshares that read like journal entries from a possessed poet, fanfiction that makes people unwell at 2am, chaos, and the occasional Reddit food rabbit hole

My hobbies are: Writing fic that's 70% emotional breakdown, 20% worldbuilding, and 10% people getting railed in a meaningful way, hexing cults with sigils and sass, collecting music like a religion, drawing OCs, being a haunted glitter goblin with eyeliner and vengeance, building 48-year fanfiction universes with fully documented timelines and named children, going to work like a normal person and coming home a completely different entity

My fandoms are: Culture Club (I'm writing a massive AU called Colour By Numbers spanning 1978-2026, and a supernatural [not the show] fic called The Rhythm of the Hollow), Linkin Park (Bennoda forever), wrestling (SMW/WWF/WCW but mainly the universes in my head)

I'm looking for people who: are too weird for Reddit, too raw for Instagram, too smart for Twitter/X, overshare about their OCs like a religion, cry over character development, understand that Jon Moss deserved better, write long posts, and don't find it weird that I've named all the children in my fictional universe including the surprise baby

My posting schedule: Erratic. Sometimes a lot. Sometimes I vanish for three weeks and return with an entire AU timeline and a new OC

Dealbreakers: Racism, ableism, transphobia, homophobia, antisemitism, being a dick, Scientology apologists, anyone who thinks Mike Shinoda is evil because of an Instagram reel, "isn't wrestling fake?", "you still like Linkin Park?", and anti-Zionists/anti-Israel people.

Before adding me: I'm a trans man (he/him, they/them). Autistic and ADHD. I write mpreg unapologetically. I am a Zionist and tired of explaining what that actually means. Pro-AI. I smoke weed. I am extremely defensive of Jon Moss and will write essays about it. My AO3 is CampCornette69 and yes that's a wrestling reference. If you want an even more in-depth about me, click this link for my about post.

Mostly a lot better. Mostly.

Spent most of the week on house stuff, and about halfway through the week it all started feeling real again. I guess I warned you about the plumbing; now I've replaced the drain assemblies in both our bathrooms. No more gunked-up mechanisms where you pull a rod up to lower the drain; now the drains pop up and down with the press of a finger, and are simpler. I replaced an under-sink shutoff valve too. At the same time the house sprang a leak around the 2nd floor, which was extra exciting, and we started getting quotes on better insulation because our HVAC system is struggling and the cost of natural gas just might be insane this winter. (You know, to better match our stupid president). Caltrop, the young cat, absolutely hated the visiting contractors and hid from them with all her might.

I bleached my funny little hair tuft, and now it's a gradient from platinum blonde to pink. Not what I was planning, but it's kind of cute. And kind of nice to not be taking it too seriously. The little tuft is for playing with.

Financially, I sold the last of my Zillian stock this week. Cut for financial planning )

Politics: I attended No Kings, which was a cold day here in Boston and I was mostly just cold and lonely for a couple of hours. I also emailed back and forth with the town about working for the mid-term elections, and they say I'd have to start as a poll worker. I'd been hoping to do more of a several-week position, but this way I have more time to take partisan action as well. Time to find some way to volunteer.

Social: managed to introduce the squirrel to more of my friends, and am working on a new introduction for the squirrel child too. Hurray! We also had a downer of a talk that has left me feeling pretty bad, but I have no clean summary of that talk so it's all just down to "change is hard" with a large side order of "change is hard on relationships". Just standard human stuff.

Next week will be busier, mostly in good ways. I'm especially looking forward to helping [personal profile] apfelsingail unpack at her new place after a much needed move. And to the predicted warmer weather on Tuesday and Wednesday; I think going outside this week is a very good idea.

My fandoms are: corpse party, indie rpg horror, vns, nu carnival and more will be mentioned in my posts. im a former rhythm game player (enstars, twst, hypmic) who loves horror and older media so that should generalise what i enjoy a bit more. i embrace cringe with open arms and am trying to unlearn shame.

hi hi!

Is there an interesting story behind your username?my username is actually just a JP nickname for my favorite character, Aventurine from honkai star rail! you'll see me mention him a lot hehe

Location and language(s):i live in the USA and speak only english! i am currently learning japanese, though.

Age range (e.g 20s, 30s, etc.):30's

Hot button/deal breaker issues that will likely lead to unfriending:all i ask is that you don't be a jerk or a bigot/etc, that's it really. i'm pretty chill otherwise.

Do you have an "About Me" post new friends can read to get a sense of who you are, the people you talk about regularly, etc.? i DO have a sticky/intro post on my journal that provides a bit more info about me!

Is your profile up-to-date or at all useful?i'd say pretty accurate, yeah!

List a few things you think it's important new friends know about you right away:i love aventurine --

You mostly write about:fandom stuff and personal/irl stuff

You never or very rarely write about:serious/heavy personal stuff. if i do ever write about that, then it will have a proper warning on it.

Is your journal mostly public, locked, or a mix of public and locked?my journal is open to the public!

Do you use filters for certain types of posts (e.g. fandom-related posts, or posts about sex, or mental health issues, etc.)?i do! i make sure to tag my entries appropriately.

Your posting frequency (e.g. daily, every few days, weekly, etc.):i'd say a few times a week

Does your journal frequently include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?the occasional image, but that's not very common.

What do you enjoy most about journaling?opening up, talking about myself more and talking to people!

How often do you read your friends list (e.g. daily, every other day, once a week, etc.)?i try to read at LEAST once a day

You really enjoy reading about:you mean on dreamwidth? just about anything, i'm not picky

You have very little interest in reading about: N/A

Your thoughts on journals that regularly include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?i don't mind them!

When it comes to comments on your posts, what matters more -- quality or quantity?i have no preference. i guess quality?

Do you unfriend people who don't comment much, even if you know they are reading you regularly?
nope! if you can't comment much, then it's all good. i imagine there's a good reason behind it.

What is your approach when it comes to commenting on other journals?i just comment whatever's comes to mind, if that makes any sense. of course it'll be related to the entry's subject matter

When you friend someone, but things don't really click, do you unfriend them without warning, or do you send them a note first? How do you prefer to be unfriended in similar circumstances?i never really had to do this before, so i really don't know how to answer. i'm not an unfriender i suppose, LOL

AND LASTLY

Friending memes often ask people to list their favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., but more often than not, those aren't things people actually write about in their journal. Do you have any favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., that you DO often write about -- not necessarily in a fandom sort of way, just in general?i looove talking about anything hoyoverse (genshin/honkai/zenless) and whatever other online/gacha game i'm playing at the time!

Any final thoughts you'd like to share with potential new friends? hello! i hope we can become friends and get to know each other more ^-^ i'm pretty chill i'd say!

Before adding me, you should know: can't think of any real heads up or warnings! my irl/personal posts never get heavy, but if they do (which will be rare) then i'll of course make sure to post a warning somewhere! other than that i'm chill

thank you for reading and i hope y'all have a lovely day!! <3

Millennial Midlife

Is there an interesting story behind your username? Not really, it's just a play on the phrase "no point crying over spilled milk" but skimmed as I was on a weight loss attempt at the time. I actually kind of hate it now, and I'm considering buying a rename token. My current name was also a rename from the original YoungAcidia that I wrote under when I started this journal way back in 2002.

Location and language(s): West of Scotland, near Loch Lomond. I only speak English, despite a short-lived attempt to learn Spanish.

Age range: Early 40's

Hot button/deal breaker issues that will likely lead to unfriending: My journal is my space to be me, and so I have no interest in sharing it with those who don't support reproductive rights, feminism, freedom of gender or sexual identity, anti-fascism, anti-colonialism, a free Palestine and Ukraine, green policies, a universal basic income, socialism...you get the jist.

Do you have an "About Me" post new friends can read to get a sense of who you are, the people you talk about regularly, etc.? Not currently, but I'll perhaps write one if I find new friends.

Is your profile up-to-date or at all useful? I did tweak it a little recently, I'm not sure how useful it is. I suppose it gives a little flavour?

List a few things you think it's important new friends know about you right away: I'm a mum of three, nonna of (soon-to-be) two, dog mum. I work for a humanitarian charity, in retail. I live with depression and low self-esteem, and have done my whole life. I experienced a messy divorce with infidelity and financial abuse - it's in the past but these things shape a person. I have an incredible circle of family and friends. I don't always like to act my age. I share my home with a ridiculous amount of books.

You mostly write about: Daily life; my everlasting struggle against my natural inclination towards hibernating on my sofa; books and films I've consumed; weight training and weight loss; finding myself in midlife.

You never or very rarely write about: I'm not a fandom-er. I have dabbled in writing fiction, but it's not based on any existing IPs. I would like to get back into it, and if I do I'll share it but that hasn't happened yet.

Is your journal mostly public, locked, or a mix of public and locked? It's access-only.  It's just so I at least get introduced to whoever is reading, but I'm not necessarily private. I doubt anyone I know in real life would be interested or even know Dreamwidth exists, so I feel pretty free to say what I want. I just prefer the idea that I'm having a conversation rather than being overheard...if that makes sense. I've maybe made my oldest entries fully locked, just from a cringe point of view as I was just a dumb kid when I started this journal, but I can't remember and don't really care.

Do you use filters for certain types of posts (e.g. fandom-related posts, or posts about sex, or mental health issues, etc.)? Not filters, but I will use a cut if I'm going into detail about something that I think might be triggering for some. For me, that's mainly when I talk about weight loss, which I don't do very often anyway.

Your posting frequency (e.g. daily, every few days, weekly, etc.): Since coming back to this journal this year, it's been at least weekly. I'm hoping to be more frequent, but finding time isn't always easy.

Does your journal frequently include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc? Not often, I can't be arsed with the faff of uploading, linking, etc. But if I do include things like that, they go under a cut.

What do you enjoy most about journaling? Chronicling life, and just getting the chance to be with my thoughts and get them out. I'm quite a solitary person a lot of the time, but even then we all need a way to talk about things. My journal is often the place for that.

How often do you read your friends list (e.g. daily, every other day, once a week, etc.)? Probably weekly, after I've written a post. I'm not as good at commenting as I used to be, but I'm working on it as I want to get back to how this journal used to be, with dialogue and community. Harder these days since the death of LJ and journaling in general, especially with people my own age.

You really enjoy reading about: Those also figuring out this stage of life, those who get personal about the things they're living through, reviews of books, rants, takes on the culture, women's issues.

You have very little interest in reading about: Fandoms...sorry!

Your thoughts on journals that regularly include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc? Your journal is your space, so crack on. But they have to be a backdrop to your thoughts to get me interested, rather than the only things you post.

When it comes to comments on your posts, what matters more -- quality or quantity? I'd like to know at least someone is reading, but I'd rather someone commented because they have something to say rather than just the Dreamwidth equivalent of a like.

Do you unfriend people who don't comment much, even if you know they are reading you regularly? No. Although how would I know they're reading...? I generally only unfriend people if I really don't gel with their journal and feel we have absolutely no common ground.

What is your approach when it comes to commenting on other journals? As I said, I'm not as good at it as I want to be. Some of that is because, since moving from LJ, I don't feel I've built up a rapport with folks. And that's on me, as I'm a a bit shy, awkward and avoidant. But I'm working on it...I perhaps need coaxed out of my shell.

When you friend someone, but things don't really click, do you unfriend them without warning, or do you send them a note first? How do you prefer to be unfriended in similar circumstances? I wouldn't announce it. I think if you aren't clicking, then it's obvious as there is just no interaction at all, so I doubt if either of us would even notice. I have unfriended people in the past who then still wanted to read my posts, and I'm cool with adding them back if that's the case. But it's a case of no hard feelings - if someone doesn't want me reading them, then that's their prerogative - journals should be safe, comfortable spaces.

AND LASTLY

Friending memes often ask people to list their favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., but more often than not, those aren't things people actually write about in their journal. Do you have any favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., that you DO often write about -- not necessarily in a fandom sort of way, just in general? Not really. I just like writing about what I've read or watched as and when it comes up. A flavour of what that could be is that I'm more drawn to human experiences like motherhood, marriage breakdown, female friendship, migration, mental health. Maybe with a little sprinkling of magical realism or dystopia too. I'm an indie kid at heart, and that's probably reflected in my listening, reading and watching tastes. My interests in my profile include some favourites of all these things.

Any final thoughts you'd like to share with potential new friends? I feel journaling online is a dying art, so those of us still here need to find each other. If I've sparked your interest, give me an add and I'll follow you back. We can try each other out, see if we fit.
