I puttered around in the morning, and got a message on Discord from my friend Jim, asking to meet for lunch. After some dithering about where to meet and general planning, I headed out for the day.

I walked through Volunteer Park, admiring the spiderwebs and greenery, cringing at the origin of the name [Spanish-American war "volunteers", aka how the Philippines transferred colonizers instead of fighting for self-determination, ugh], and climbing the water tower. (And cringing at the history plaques at the top, which wax rhapsodic about the Olmstead clan, whose patriarch was responsible for Central Park - i.e. "clearing out" the Black community of Seneca Village. Apparently the family did landscaping for parks across the country, which I guess is kind of interesting, but I'll always wonder at what cost.)

I ended up at a nearby cafe for another lovely latte, and got a lot of work done on both Tagalog studies and my RogueCel talk. Jim picked me up and drove me across Lake Washington to a sushi place whose name I didn't catch. We talked, catching up on lots of things big and small. Hooray, friendship!

He dropped me off in U District, and I went off wandering and shopping: the Earthbound Boss Fight Books analysis from game store Pink Gorilla, thrifting a good pair of corduroys at Crossroads (and almost buying a few other things at other thrift shops), having way too much bubble tea while working on more talk/language stuff, and my first US legal cannabis experience (Hey, when in Rome...)

I walked back to my AirBNB from there, across a surprisingly unguarded drawbridge (I'm used to much higher fences on pedestrian walkways across bridges) and through the seriously *gorgeous* Portage Hill/North Broadway area.

I got dinner near my AirBNB in a lovely place, getting a "bartender's whimsy" cocktail that challenged my anti-peat stance in a really fantastic way and some perfectly nice shrimp, chorizo, and potatoes, though I was expecting the "leek puree" to be less sauce and more mashed-potato-ish side. Still delicious, though. I also did a quick grocery store run - the local grocery's cheese case is fueled by Murray's Cheese, which as a New Yorker surprised and delighted me. (No, I wasn't aware that Murray's is now owned by one of the major US grocery chains.)

This leads us to this point. I'm seeing Jim again on Saturday, going way up north to his place for Dungeons and Dragons, but have no other solid plans until then. We'll see what the future holds!
